Lionel Messi wins the Ballon d'or award for the fifth time

The Barcelona superstar enjoyed an incredible year and has now scooped the prestigious prize for a fifth time. Messi has been beaten by Cristiano Ronaldo in the last two years but has edged out the Real Madrid superstar and team-mate Neymar this time around. His previous wins came between 2009 and 2012 with the latest triumph indicating his return to the top of the world game.
