2016 BMW M4 GTS DTM Safety Car Unveiled
Based on the showroom-bound BMW M4 GTS , which has a limited build run of just 700 units worldwide, this year’s DTM safety car required only a few modifications to bring it up to spec for use in the German racing series.
Under the bonnet, this year’s safety car features the production GTS’ 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six engine. Aided by the inclusion of water injection technology, the GTS motor develops 368kW of power and 600Nm of torque, a healthy increase of 51kW and 50Nm over the standard M3 / M4 motor.
Drive is channelled to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
In order to equip the safety car with the necessary roll cage, fire extinguisher, and six-point harness, the M4 GTS DTM Safety Car is fitted with the GTS’ optional Clubsport Package.
Unique modifications for the safety car include the roof-mounted LED light bar and flashing LED lights in the lower air dam. The M4’s headlights have also been modified to allow them flash automatically as required, while the all-white body has been slathered with DTM Safety Car and sponsorship stickers.
Carried over from the production GTS are its acid orange highlights, and an aero package that include a prominent front splitter and a large, fixed rear wing.
Like the regular GTS, the DTM safety car rides on an exclusive set of alloys, with 19-inch units up front matched to 265/35 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, and 20-inch rims at the rear fitted with 285/30 tyres.
The official DTM safety driver, Juergen Kastenholz, says, “I … have complete trust in the car from the word go, and this is absolutely essential to be able to lead a pack of 24 DTM racing cars quickly around the circuit during the caution periods”.
